We like to say: Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. (It's a Key Process in the book, The Nine Rooms of Happiness, which you have bought and read, right?) Which in this case applies to all that communication! You can easily get overwhelmed when you inbox says 85 emails, but I know what I do in this case: I designate 30 minutes to race through them and truthfully many are junk. I can delete or reply in a word or three (especially when someone pitches me a story meant for the beauty or fitness editors and I just redirect them and cc the right person). But if a friend needs your attention you take longer for her, or if an interesting idea comes through you can print it out and read it later.
I have what I call a "one touch" rule. This means if I open it, I deal with it. No going back. Never to be messed with again. That way I never have too many emails all at once that need doubling back. Occasionally I will have to follow up but then I loop in third parties (what do you guys think of this idea? lets have a confab!? and always cc myself. That way I can get back to it later but I stay in the one-touch world.
Just my two cents of what works for me. but the "pearl" for Too much of a Good thing is a Bad thing is this: Know your limits! And that means if you don't want email, just disable your account. Try Facebook, where you can post your status and comment or not comment as you choose. you have a mailbox and a wall so you can take personal coments but don't need to "respond" to everyone. Might work for you. Either way, you are in control of technology, not the other way around.
Now, my problem is I facebook and tweat and email and text. I blog in three places (here and Self and Yahoo). I don't have a thought bubble to myself. So I gotta go and write all those. Too much of a good thing? We shall see!!!!
